Brief Answer:
You can give sugar water or apple juice as a laxative

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for being on the 'Ask A Doctor' platform.

I have gone through the query and do understand your concern.

Bowel irregularities are common in early infancy and passing stool 4-5 times a day or once in 4-5 days is considered normal.

These bowel irregularities are not related to vaccination. So you need not worry about that.
Infants normally work hard to pass stool, so straining/crying or reddened face while passing stool isn’t necessarily alarming.

I won't get overly worried if otherwise, the baby is taking feeds well, passing urine, there is no vomiting or abdominal distension.

I would like to know if there is any local swelling, redness or tenderness at the vaccination site causing distress to the baby.

For small babies laxatives(like lactulose or polyethylene glycol) are better to be avoided.
You can give sugar water or apple juice as it is poorly absorbed and helps in forming stool. It can be given about 30-40 ml of same twice a day for better effect.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards

Hi,

Glycerine suppositories can be used in infants if other measures are not working.

Yes we tried to insert glycerine infant suppository but didn’t inserted well inside so came out. We gave him sugar water and within half an hour he pooped. His poop was mustard color and not water but different than before like soft but thick poop. Is it normal? This 3 days not pooping only happened once. Is this due to formula milk? I am using S-26 pro gold as recommended by his Paedritician and it suits him. Like I give 75ml in single scoop for about 3 to 4 times a day and rest of time only breastfeeding. He is exactly 2 months and 7 days now, his birth weight was 3.5kg and now as last Tuesday he weighs about 6.6kg.
My friend keep telling me it’s big thing he didn’t poop for 3 days , and asking me to change formula milk.
I have heard changing formula milk can make baby sick

Brief Answer:
You can continue with the same formula milk, don't get worried about stool

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for follow up

I won't get worried unless the stool is too hard and pellet like, there is any abdominal fullness or vomiting.
The stool consistency you described appears normal to me.
The weight gain is also adequate.Dilution you described is also OK.
Its not like that changing formula milk makes baby sick but yes he may not like the new formula and his intake may decrease. Also there is a possibilty of change in bowel pattern.
Again I don't think that passing stool once in 3-4 days is abnormal. You may try sugar water or apple juice as advised.
If you have any doubt you can ask me again or can consult your pediatrician regarding the same.

I hope this helps.
Wishing for your baby's good health.

Brief Answer:
Repeating sugar water twice or thrice will help

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for follow up

I think repeating the sugar water two or three times more will help in making the bowel more regular.

Again same happened, he didn’t poop for two days. Was giving him sugar water but when I just inserted glycerin he pushed it out with poop. The poop picture is attached. This is worrying me

Brief Answer:
This seems to be normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for follow up

I have seen the image and it appears normal to me.
As already told infrequent stool does not means that baby is constipated. There is inherent tendency to change in bowel movement in infancy. Suppose if baby is not passing stool for one day and next day if he is passing stool after putting suppository, this also does not mean constipation.Frequent use of suppository is also not good.
If stool is too hard, mixed with blood, there is abnormal abdominal fullness or vomiting is there then only treatment is needed.
What I can suggest in such condition that you may try changing formula to alleviate your anxiety.
You can discuss with your pediatrician or feel free to ask me whenever you have any doubt.
